PRAGUE, April 27 (Reuters) - Italy's Eni is close to acquiring 43 filling stations put up for sale by a unit of U.S. oil major ExxonMobil ...

...in the Czech Republic, a Czech news Web portal reported on Friday.

The report on www.aktualne.cz quoted an unspecified source familiar with the transaction as saying details of the acquisition of ExxonMobil's Esso fuel retail network by Eni would be announced soon.

It did not say how much Eni would pay for the stations.

Eni, Europe's fourth-biggest oil company, operates more than 70 filling stations in the Czech Republic under the Agip brand.

Officials at local units of Esso and Eni could not be reached for comment. There was no immediate comment from Eni in Italy.

Local newspaper reports have earlier said Czech oil group Unipetrol , owned by Polish refiner PKN Orlen , was interested in taking over the Esso chain.

Unipetrol's fuel retailer, Benzina, has the biggest network in the central European country, with more than 300 filling stations.
