Chile beat the United States 2-1 in their World Team Cup tie in Duesseldorf on Monday, with Fernando Gonzalez defeating James Blake in their Top...

...10 clash.

Australian Open finalist Gonzalez, the world number five, beat world number eight Blake 6-4 7-5 in the opening match of the Red Group tie.

"I am quite happy with my game, particularly with my good timing," Gonzalez was quoted as saying on the World Team Cup's Web site (www.arag-world-team-cup.com).

"Another important fact was that I didn't have to play too long and thus could save strength for the upcoming matches."

Nicolas Massu won the other singles match, beating Mardy Fish 6-4 7-6. The United States' Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, proved too strong for Julio Peralta and Jorge Aguilar, winning their doubles match 6-1 6-2.

In the Blue Group, the Czechs had to wait for a thrilling doubles clash to seal a 2-1 win over Spain. Tomas Berdych and Martin Damm came back from a set down to beat David Ferrer and Bartolome Salva-Vidal 5-7 6-3 10-8.

Earlier, Ferrer beat Berdych 6-1 6-3 and in the other singles match, Jan Hajek beat Salva-Vidal 6-2 6-4.
