BRUSSELS, June 22 (Reuters) - Polish President Lech Kaczynski said on Friday summit talks on a treaty to reform the European Union were...

..."very difficult" and he was not optimistic an agreement would be reached.

He told reporters after private meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the end of the first day of the summit: "Talks so far show that the situation is very difficult.

"Unfortunately I cannot say I am an optimist but it is my duty as a member of the European Council to carry on with talks and we will carry on with talks," Kaczynski said. Poland is alone in demanding to change the voting system for EU decision making at the heart of the proposed treaty.
