...rights, and several countries urged Berlin to continue to seek a compromise with Warsaw, a senior EU diplomat said.

Lithuania and the Czech Republic spoke out at an EU summit against the German tactics after Berlin threatened to launch negotiations on a new EU reform treaty without Polish assent.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Nicolas Sarkozy met privately to appeal to German Chancellor Angela Merkel to give negotiations another chance and offer Warsaw a longer delay in the introduction of a reformed EU voting system, the diplomat said.

They also telephoned Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski to urge him to compromise, another EU source said.
