BRATISLAVA, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Foreign direct investment in Slovakia nearly tripled in 2006, rising to 61.2 billion crowns ($2.54 billion) from...

...22.1 billion in the previous year, the Statistics Office said on Thursday.

The largest investment inflow went into public administration and defence, the Statistics Office said giving further details of the biggest projects.

The cumulative amount of foreign direct investment in Slovakia totalled 483.6 billion crowns at the end of 2006.

Slovakia has become a popular place for investors since joining European Union in 2004 and adoption of market friendly economic reforms by the previous center-right government.

FDI inflows, mainly into car and electronics industries, have fuelled Slovakia's economy growth, which is expected to surpass last year's record of 8.3 percent in 2007.
