 ======================= PRESS DIGEST ==========================
NEW MINISTER NOMINEE: The Green Party nominated Dusan Luzny
as the candidate to become Education Minister, following the
resignation of Dana Kuchtova. The nomination came after a stormy
debate and the result is a victory for opposers of party
chairman Martin Bursik, who had threatened to demand that the
party leaves the ruling coalition if they have no way. The
nomination will still be discussed by the party's parliamentary
caucus.

SAVINGS: The central bank would welcome a reduction in the
state subsidies for private savings in building and loans
societies, Vice-Governor Miroslav Singer said. But Finance
Minister Miroslav Kalousek said he would not submit any change
before the end of 2008. The ministry is working on some other
changes, including a possible end to the tax-deductibility of
interest payments on mortgages.

EVENTUAL IRAQ WITHDRAWAL: The Czechs may in the coming years
gradually pull out several dozen of their soldiers that are
guarding a British base in Basra. Several experts training Iraqi
forces under a NATO command in Baghdad may stay. No troop
reduction is expected in 2008.
    Hospodarske Noviny, page 2.

RADAR NOT DANGEROUS: A group of Czech experts determined
that a planned U.S. radar would emit less electromagnetic waves
than a mobile telephone next to a person's ear.

RECORD ART AUCTION: Frantisek Kupka's abstract painting
Elevation IV sold for 22.1 million crowns ($1.13 million) on the
weekend, the highest price ever paid at a Czech auction.
