Slovak crown hit 1-wk high on region, upside seen

    The crown firmed as high as 33.220 per euro , 
hitting its strongest level since Nov. 21. It last dealt at 
33.300 by 1345 GMT, up about half a percent from the previous 
domestic close. 
    Emerging market currencies and bonds benefited from a 
stabilisation in the dollar and major markets after this month's 
declines, while emerging equities  gained half a 
percent [EMRG/FRX]. 
    "The crown moved (firmed) alongside the region, mainly the 
Polish zloty, Hungary's forint, Romanian leu and of course the 
Czech crown," said Tatra Banka dealer Milan Cavojec. "The 33.200 
per euro might hold for now (as a crown resistance level)." 
    The Czech crown firmed to an all-time high of 26.42 against 
the euro  on Wednesday [ID:nL28549932], while the 
Polish zloty rose to near two-week highs  and the 
Hungarian forint was up 0.8 percent  to one-week highs. 
    Some dealers said the Slovak crown could firm towards 32.800 
per euro, within sight of an all-time high of 32.710 per euro 
hit in March, if global markets show signs of lasting 
stabilisation. 
    Investors ignored the Slovak Statistics Office's revised 
second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) data, putting annual 
growth at 9.3 percent, a touch lower from an originally reported 
9.4 percent annual increase [ID:nBSD000062].
