Under the European Union's ESA methodology, the public sector deficit was 2.6 percent of GDP in 2005. The ministry has proposed a 2007 budget outline forecasting 4.0 percent gap, above the 3.3 percent cap set in the Convergence Programme. - The country would need to squeeze the deficit below 3 percent by 2008 to be able to join the euro in 2010, as planned by the outgoing centre-left cabinet. - For recent stories on the budget, click on [CZ-GVD-POL-RTRS] or [CZ-RTRS-DBT].
