Oil flow through the Druzhba pipeline to Slovakia from Russia was halted, as expected, on Monday evening amid a dispute between Moscow and Belarus, oil pipeline operator Transpetrol said.

"At 7:54 p.m. (1854 GMT) oil supplies through the Druzba pipeline to Slovakia stopped," Transpetrol Chief Executive Stefan Czucz said in a statement.

The Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline splits into two spurs in Belarus. Poland reported a halt in supplies through the northern spur of the pipeline overnight. The southern spur takes oil to Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary.

Russia's pipeline monopoly Transneft said earlier on Monday it was forced to act because Minsk had been siphoning off oil illegally from the Druzhba pipeline system.

Europe's biggest economy, Germany, later confirmed refineries in its ex-Communist east were also cut off.
