The Czech rightist Civic Democrats continue to hold a lead over the leftist opposition Social Democrats after their centre-right cabinet won a parliamentary vote of confidence last week, a poll showed. The Civic Democrats formed the cabinet with the centrist Christian Democrats and the Green Party. The poll, by the private Factum Invenio agency, was conducted between Jan. 19 and Jan. 24 among 975 Czechs. It said that according to the poll results, the government coalition would win 107 seats in the lower house to 93 for leftist parties. The coalition now holds just 100 seats and it squeezed through the confidence vote thanks to the abstention of two rebel leftist deputies. The poll also showed that only a quarter of Czechs believed the cabinet would serve its full term until 2010 and only one third thought it would be able to push through its programme in the hung parliament.
