Volkswagen's Czech unit Skoda Auto is considering building a new cheap small car for developing markets in India, China and Russia, the...

...brand's head Detlef Wittig said in remarks published on Monday.

Skoda, fully owned by Germany's carmaker, currently produces the small Fabia, the mid-size Octavia model and the saloon Superb. It plans to add a new Roomster MPV model to its line this year to raise sales to more than 500,000 cars.

Wittig told the Czech business daily Hospodarske Noviny in an interview that a new model smaller than the Fabia could be sold for between 7,000 euros ($9,201) and 8,000 euros ($10,520), cheaper than the Fabia which costs 10,000 euros in Europe.

"The really interesting future markets are those in India, China and Russia. We need cheap cars for these markets, customers there make their (purchasing) decisions purely on the basis of price," Wittig was quoted as saying.
