TABLE-Czech left narrows gap behind right-wing

    The Czech opposition Social 
Democrats have narrowed the gap on the ruling right-wing Civic 
Democrats, an opinion poll showed on Wednesday. 
    The poll, by the state agency CVVM, was conducted between 
Feb. 5 and 12 and canvassed 1,080 Czechs. 
    It gave the Civic Democrats 34.5 percent of the vote, down 
from 37.0 a month ago, while the Social Democrats polled 26.0 
percent, up from 24.5. 
    The Civic Democrats formed a cabinet with the centrist 
Christian Democrats and the Green Party last month, more than 
seven months after elections last June, and won a parliamentary 
vote of confidence on Jan. 19. 
    But the coalition holds just 100 seats in the 200-seat lower 
house and barely squeezed through the confidence vote thanks to 
the abstention of two rebel leftist deputies which gave it a 
majority of deputies present. 
    The poll results, excluding undecided and non-voting 
respondents, showed the coalition would now win 54.5 percent of 
the vote versus a total of 41.5 percent for the opposition 
Social Democrats and the Communists.

   Pollsters: The FI and CVVM results are based on a model 
predicting gains at the poll box, excluding those not willing to 
vote and undecided. 
   STEM results are direct voter preferences, and include 
replies from all respondents including those not willing to 
vote. Parties should thus win a larger than indicated share of 
the vote at the election.
