Slovakia delayed on Tuesday a decision on restarting a Soviet-era nuclear reactor amid gas shortages, a move that would have put it on a collision course with the European Union which is critical of the plan.

Slovak consumer prices fell by 0.2 percent month-on-month in December, putting the annual headline inflation rate at 4.4 percent, the Statistics Office said on Tuesday.

The Slovak factory of car maker Volkswagen has further reduced production and it now makes the SUV model Audi Q7 only on one shift a day, sources say. Workers receive only 75 percent of their salaries and many are afraid they would lose their jobs.

FOREIGN MINISTERS STAYS FOR NOW
Foreign Minister Jan Kubis has postponed his departure from the government because of the current gas crisis. Kubis was supposed to leave the cabinet this week to take up a position at the United Nations.

TOLL SYSTEM
The government has signed a contract with the consortium that will build and operate the new highway toll system. The tender was criticised by the opposition and the media because the government had picked the most expensive bid, worth 852.1 million euros.

Restarting the decommissioned reactor at the Jaslovske Bohunice power station would take only three days. Energy experts say the reactor would be in operation for a limited period of time as it has fuel only for around 30 days.
