SINGAPORE, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Gold prices were steady on Tuesday as uncertainty if Ireland could secure a bailout supported prices.
FUNDAMENTALS
* Spot gold edged down 0.2 percent to $1,363.6 an ounce by 0034 GMT.
* U.S. gold futures gained 0.4 percent to $1,363.3.
* Political uncertainty in Ireland squashed initial euphoria over an EU/IMF bailout plan in the previous session, driving the dollar up against a basket of currencies.
* Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen defied mounting pressure to quit on Monday, saying he would stay in office until parliament passed an austerity budget needed to secure the IMF/EU bailout, then call an early election. [
]* Investors also worried about a spillover of Ireland's debt crisis to other nations, such as Portugal or Spain.
* Holdings in the iShares Silver Trust hit a record high of 10,841.98 tonnes, suggesting robust investment demand in the metals.[
]* However, holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust fell 4.252 tonnes to 1,285.084 tonnes, its lowest in more than a month.
* Spot silver rose to as much as $27.87 an ounce, just a hair off a 10-day high of $27.90 hit in the previous session. It was trading at $27.73.
MARKET NEWS
* Bank shares weighed on Wall Street on Monday as Europe's smoldering debt crisis and fears of an insider trading probe in the United States sapped buying interest for most of the session.
