TOKYO, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Gold steadied on Tuesday, taking a breather after rising the previous day to within striking distance of its all-time high above $1,060 an ounce on a weak dollar.
FUNDAMENTALS
* Gold <XAU=> was at $1,055.40 per ounce at 2353 GMT, almost flat from New York's notional close of $1,055.25. It had risen as high as $1,058.75 on Monday, near the record high of $1,061.20 set last week.
* U.S. gold futures for December delivery <GCZ9> were $1,056.4 per ounce, down $1.1 or 1 percent from the previous settlement after rising $8.90 on Monday.
* The world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, the SPDR Gold Trust <GLD>, said its holdings stood at 1,109.314 tonnes as of Oct. 12, unchanged since Oct. 7. [
]* The amount of metal Zurich Cantonal Bank holds to back its palladium exchange-traded fund fell 12,699 ounces or 2.3 percent in the week to Oct. 9, the company said. [
]MARKET NEWS
* The dollar shifted back onto the defensive on Tuesday as investors added to long positions in high-yielding currencies on expectations that robust U.S. earnings would sustain risk appetite. [
]* The euro stood at $1.4787 <EUR=> after topping $1.48 the previous day for the first time since Oct. 8.
* The S&P 500 U.S. share index managed a sixth consecutive day of gains on Monday to end at its closing high for the year as energy shares rose alongside the price of oil. [
]* Oil prices <CLc1> jumped 2 percent on Monday on optimism about the pace of global economic recovery and as cool weather across the United States boosted fuel demand. [
