TOKYO, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Gold prices held steady around $1,145 per ounce on Friday after gaining in New York the previous day on a fall in the dollar against other currencies.
Gold futures got a lift on Thursday in defensive buying ahead of any future measures taken by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to rein in speculation in metals trading, dealers said.
FUNDAMENTALS
* Spot gold <XAU=> was at $1,144.40 per ounce as of 0022 GMT, compared to New York's notional close of $1,142.15.
* U.S. gold futures for February delivery <GCG0> were at $1,144.60 per ounce, compared to $1,143.00 an ounce on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
* Palladium rose more than 5 percent to an 18-month high on Thursday, boosted by strong investment demand due to the launch of a new exchange-traded fund (ETF) backed by the metal in New York.
* The world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, SPDR Gold Trust <GLD>, said its holdings stood at 1,113.750 tonnes as of Jan. 14, down 0.2 percent from the previous business day. [
]* The world's largest silver-backed exchange-traded fund, the iShares Silver Trust <SLV>, said its silver holdings stood at 9,339.19 tonnes as of Jan. 14, down 1.6 percent from the previous business day. [

* Technology shares drove Wall Street higher on Thursday on bets ahead of Intel's quarterly results that business spending will bolster profits in the sector. [
]* The dollar fell against the yen as a drop in December U.S. retail sales and other data reinforced the view the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged for the forseeable future. [
